The building’s story adds depth to its appeal. Hospitality on this site dates back to 1665, when it first operated as The Golden Cross Inn. In 1872, it became Hotel Kummer, known as a meeting place for artists, writers and musicians. Following an extensive renovation, the property reopened as Hotel Motto in 2021, retaining its cultural significance while introducing a fresh identity. The building also holds a musical connection: composer Josef Strauss was born here in 1827, part of the renowned Strauss family that shaped Vienna’s musical heritage. During the Allied occupation after the Second World War, the building was used by French forces, adding another layer to its long and varied history.
