Review Eoin Tyrrell
Just a short walk from major landmarks like the Duomo, Ponte Vecchio and the Accademia Gallery, Hotel Calimala sits on a quiet street in central Florence. Its prime location in the heart of the city’s historic centre makes it easy to explore on foot, whether visiting museums, must-see sights or Florence’s renowned high-end boutiques.
The hotel occupies two historic buildings. The East wing is set within the 16th-century Palazzo degli Angeli, once home to Florentine poet Aldo Palazzeschi. Its restoration preserved original features like pietra serena stone and Tuscan marble, now complemented by modern furnishings in rich, solid colours. The West wing, designed in the 19th century by architect Pietro Bardi, pairs Gothic architecture with Art Deco interiors – think brass fixtures, marble bathrooms and plush velvet upholstery. Exposed brick walls and herringbone tile floors highlight the heritage of both buildings, while bold colours and clean lines add a contemporary touch.

The highlight of our stay was dinner at Mezè, the hotel’s Mediterranean-inspired restaurant. The ambience strikes the perfect balance – vibrant yet intimate, ideal for both groups and couples. Head chef Hilla Attar personally introduced several dishes, adding a warm, welcoming touch. Standouts included the Mezè bread plate, served with an array of flavourful dips (the balsamic garlic confit was unforgettable); brown-buttered scallops, perfectly seared and luxuriously rich; and finally, the cheesecake – a refined twist on the classic that surpassed all expectations.

For a more casual experience, the Angel Roofbar offers relaxed dining. Sip signature cocktails alongside Mediterranean-inspired bites like creamy hummus and warm pita bread – an ideal spot for an aperitivo while enjoying unparalleled views of Florence’s historic centre.
