Review Frank Cassidy
Once the headquarters of the Metropolitan Police, this iconic building has been transformed into a stunning five-star hotel, blending its rich history with contemporary elegance. It’s within walking distance of Trafalgar Square, Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament and West End theatres. Despite its central London location, the Great Scotland Yard Hotel offers a sense of tranquillity, tucked as it is away in a quiet cul-de-sac. Guests are welcomed into a grand, yet inviting, lobby by exceptionally attentive and friendly staff.
The décor throughout leans heavily on artwork and historical memorabilia, evoking the building’s past. A standout is the series of portraits by British artist and social historian Nicola Green in the entrance hall, which captures the extraordinary history of Great Scotland Yard through diverse characters. These include notorious gangsters, infamous criminals, prominent judges, lawyers, politicians, police personnel, literary figures and monarchs. Among them is Countess Markievicz, an Irish politician, revolutionary and the first woman elected to Westminster Parliament. The interiors also feature eccentric and playful touches, like an oversized glossy black rhino chair and whimsical sausage dog cushions.

The bedrooms and suites are more contemporary than the public spaces, yet still rooted in tradition, offering a unique blend of history, luxury and modern comfort.
I was especially delighted to discover the Síbín, a secluded bar serving heritage whiskies, premium wines and Champagnes. Interestingly, the word ‘Síbín’ originated in Ireland in the 1780s, referring to an unlicensed drinking establishment. With mass emigration from Ireland in the 1800s, the term spread globally, serving as a precursor to the now-ubiquitous Irish pub.
Whatever brings you to London, Great Scotland Yard Hotel is an excellent base from which to explore the city while enjoying a touch of mystery and sophistication.
