Based in County Galway, this contemporary Irish artist works from her Sandyhill Cottage Studio in Cloonascragh, where painting and making are central to daily life. Katherine Halford Greene’s creative path began in childhood, encouraged by her father, who first placed a paintbrush in her hand and helped nurture a lifelong engagement with visual art.
Before committing fully to her studio practice, Katherine followed a varied creative career. She trained and worked as a French cuisine chef before establishing a successful artisan candle business. Art remained a constant alongside these pursuits, eventually leading her to formal education in the visual arts. She completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Art and Design, followed by an Honours Degree in Fine Art Painting at Cluain Mhuire Art College, Galway–Mayo Institute of Technology. She later earned a Master’s Degree in the History of Art and Architecture at the University of Limerick, with academic interests including human rights and cross-cultural influences between Western, Japanese, Chinese and Turkish art traditions.
Her contemporary painting practice incorporates cold wax and acrylic techniques, along with image transfer processes that create layered, textured surfaces. Working across abstract and representational styles, the artist often draws inspiration from landscape, memory and personal experience. Her paintings reflect a considered, process-driven approach, where mark-making, surface and materiality play a central role.
In addition to her painting practice, Katherine is committed to sharing creativity through education. From her Galway studio, she offers art and craft classes for adults and children of all skill levels. These classes focus on experimentation, confidence-building and hands-on making, encouraging participants to engage with painting, ceramics and creative crafts in an accessible and supportive environment.
Today, the artist continues to develop her work while remaining closely connected to her local community and the wider contemporary Irish art scene. Her original artwork is available through her studio and online platforms, and her practice continues to evolve through ongoing exploration of materials, technique and creative process.
