John Fitzgerald

by Lynne Clark

Artist-in-residence at the Curragh Racecourse and recognised as one of Ireland’s leading equine artists, John Fitzgerald has painted some the greatest Irish racehorses of our time, commissioned by prominent owners from Ireland and the UK.

He was filmed by Channel 4 Racing while doing A.P. Mc Coy’s portrait at the Cheltenham Festival in 2014.  In 2018 John was commissioned to paint, Shergar, for a BBC Documentary Searching for Shergar.

John has recently launched a range of limited edition bronze sculptures.

My great hope for my work is that it makes people experience a truly special feeling that only they can explain. I hope that they experience a sense of what I feel when I paint each piece. These feelings and emotions can’t be expressed in words, as it’s on such a deeper level. To be able to paint is a privilege, to be able to paint the horse is a blessing that I’m privileged to share
