Discover the London Postal Museum and ride the Mail Train

If just visiting London for a West End show, The Postal Museum is a perfect pre-theatre activity for curious minds of all ages, with captivating exhibits and stories. This hidden gem offers a fascinating journey through the history of postal communication and its profound impact on society. Spanning over 500 years, the museum showcases unusual artefacts, from the Penny Black, the world’s first adhesive postage stamp, to a restored 19th century Mail Coach. Visitors can also discover quirky innovations like five-wheeled cycles and mail rockets.

Did you know a private underground line ran beneath London’s streets, transporting post separately from the Tube? Operating from 1927 to 2003, this hidden system was unknown to most because only mailbags could travel this narrow gauge, driverless underground railway. Across the road from the museum, the Mail Rail allows visitors to experience this subterranean world on a journey through the historic postal railway.
