Princess Grace’s deep affection for her Irish heritage
Princess Grace of Monaco, formerly Grace Kelly, had strong ties to Ireland through her paternal grandfather, John Henry Kelly. Born in Drumilra, near Newport in County Mayo, he left for the United States in 1867 at the age of twenty where he married and had ten children. His son, John Brendan Kelly, was the father of Princess Grace.

The Kellys rose to prominence in Philadelphia and were a prosperous family. Grace’s father, John B. Kelly Sr., was a three-time Olympic gold medallist in rowing and a successful businessman. Her mother, Margaret Majer Kelly, a former model, became a physical education instructor and the first coach of women’s athletic teams at the University of Pennsylvania. Grace’s brother, John B. Kelly Jr., excelled in rowing, winning national championships and competing in four Olympic Games. Her uncle, George Kelly, was a distinguished actor and playwright, winning the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1926.
Grace Kelly’s career was marked by extraordinary success. She starred in notable films like High Noon, Rear Window and To Catch a Thief. Her performance in The Country Girl earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress, solidifying her legacy before retiring from acting at the age of twenty-six to marry Prince Rainier and embrace her role as Princess of Monaco.

Princess Grace had a deep affection for Ireland and her Irish heritage, which drew her to visit the country and County Mayo many times. In 1961, during a state visit to Ireland, she and her husband visited her family’s homestead. In 1976, she purchased the cottage where her grandfather had grown up and planned to build a holiday home in Drumilra, though these plans were never realised due to her tragic death in a car accident in 1982.
In 1984, Prince Rainier III founded the Princess Grace Irish Library in memory of his late wife’s connection to her Irish heritage. An avid collector of Irish literature, Princess Grace’s personal collection of books and sheet music became the foundation of the library. Today, it holds an extensive array of Irish literature, history and cultural works, featuring renowned authors such as Oscar Wilde, John M. Synge, George Bernard Shaw and Samuel Beckett. The library also boasts many rare books and first editions, including a first full edition of James Joyce’s Ulysses.
Today, a statue of the princess, created by Mayo-based sculptor Mark Rode, stands near her ancestral home. Unveiled by her son, Prince Albert of Monaco, the statue is based on a photograph of the Oscar-winner that Albert personally selected.
