This autumn, Dublin’s Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA) will present A R C H I P E L A G O, an exhibition highlighting the strength and diversity of contemporary Irish photography. Running from September through October, the show features sixteen artists whose work spans the myriad of themes that concern lens-based culture in Ireland today.
The exhibition is a collaboration between the RHA and Island Photographers, an artist-led group committed to raising awareness and fostering engagement with contemporary photography in Ireland. Through exhibitions, educational programmes, public talks, and the sale of photographic works, Island Photographers aims to strengthen the role of photography within Irish visual culture.
One of their key initiatives is a series of public talks, where photographic artists present their work
and receive feedback from peers. These events provide a platform for curators, critics and other art
professionals to contribute to wider conversations about photography’s place in the cultural landscape.
All eight core members of Island Photographers – Conor Horgan, Shane Lynam, Fionn McCann, Malcolm McGettigan, Yvette Monahan, Kate Nolan, Brían Sparks and Agata Stoinska – will be represented in the exhibition, alongside eight invited practitioners.
For anyone interested in photography or contemporary art, A R C H I P E L A G O offers a rare and exciting look at the forefront of Irish visual storytelling. Following are a selection of works featured in the exhibition.
